The Mystery of the Acoustic Guitar Piece "Romance"

1/19/2020

“Romance” is a vintage acoustic guitar piece that remains to be of a great mystery when it comes to its authorship and origin.

The earliest documented manuscript can be traced back to the late 19th century. There had been several widespread speculations as who created it; one of which points to Antonio Rubira. The second one bore a distinct note “Melodia de Sor" (Sor's melody) at the bottom part referencing it to Fernando Sor. The earliest known recording entitled “Sort-Estudio para Guitarra" was said to be in between 1897 and 1901 done in Madrid featuring Simon and Luis Ramirez.

Two more renowned Spanish guitarists surfaced as the "author" of this guitar piece. Narciso Yepes is listed as the author of “Romance” as he holds the Spanish copyrights of the composition. Nevertheless, he was referred to be the arranger of the piece but not the author. In 1941, Vicente Gomez performed and published "Romance" in the movie “Blood and Sand” yet his claim to be the author is highly-unlikely as surely it doesn't match the time the first manuscript was dated.

Nevertheless, “Romance” has been popularly used from movies to huge concerts and live performances and remained to be one of the greatest acoustic pieces in the music industry.

"Taps" a noteworthy melody of Military tribute and utmost honor

“Taps” only has a few notes but is a highly-respected bugle calls in the US Military history.

“Taps” is derived from the Dutch word “taptoe" which was a command (Tap toe) for shutting the “tap” of a keg.

Union General Daniel Adams Butterfield during the American Civil War is the one who created the revised present-day version. He collaborated with Oliver Wilcox Norton, his bugler, to sound it. The melody gained popularity when both the Confederate and Union forces started using it. Hence, in 1874 the United States Army officially recognized it.

It was Union Captain John C. Tidball, who initiated the custom of playing the tune at military funerals. Finally, In 1891, the regulations of the U.S. infantry made “Taps” mandatory at all military funerals.

"Taps" not only is significant about creating a connection with families who have lost but it gives tribute and high-respect to an individual who has represented and served the country with the utmost honor.

Currently, "Taps" has prominent versions and is also extensively utilized at “Girl Guide,” “Girl Scout,” and “Boy Scout” camps and meetings.
