​Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974) was one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. He was a culmination of wit, diverse musical style, unique impressionism, and unforgettable orchestral presence.

His talent was already undeniable at a young age. He started putting up bands and performed on local events, gradually up-leveled to embassy parties and private society balls until being invited to play to prestigious events and wide audiences. 

Despite being disbanded for how many times, he did not stop collaborating even with equally talented (sometimes rival artists) until he was able to create his own orchestra. His band's fame propelled that they not only traveled across the US but also performed in Europe, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and France.

Duke Ellington has fun spontaneity of jazz, a keen musical innovator, and an epitome of extraordinary talent which yielded him a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Mary Elfrieda Scruggs (1910-1981) who eventually became Mary Lou Williams was one of the most unforgettable and highly revered female musicians of the 20th century. She was a successful composer, arranger, and jazz and swing pianist whose impact was so evident until today's time.

She was tagged as the "Little Piano Girl" at 15, found her way to several bands until her work and talent were recognized worldwide. 

Mary Lou Williams was adored by her contemporaries for her jovial spirit, artistic excellence, and resilience. Her huge collection of work and performances evoke remarkable musical talent and endurance being in an era where black music was being looked down on, especially for a budding female artist. 

On her stardom, Mary Lou set up multiple charitable organizations across Harlem for underprivileged musicians and taught jazz to school children. 

She was a beautiful soul that even after her death, earned a lot of recognition and citations all over the country. “Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture” was established by Duke University in North Carolina. An annual “Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival” is held at The Kennedy Center since 1996, and the list goes on.
