Hands on Guitar

Without these fingers a guitar is merely wood and steel. There is no sound and you are left with a beautiful art piece. It's that moment when flesh meets metal that it comes to life. Each note reverberates in the wooden chamber filling our ears with music. We are drawn to this... We spend hours listening to our favorite tunes, knowing them so well we could air guitar the entire song. Even at 6 weeks in the womb, we are grooving to our own heart beat. We love music! For me, the moment I felt those strings and made the connection from hand to ear, I was hooked. It was as if music was always there and the guitar was my missing appendage. I awoke to a world I had always known but needed to discover. At first, my digits couldn't keep up with my new found love of music and creative prowess. However, just like my legs grew from walkers to runners, so did my fingers one step at a time. The patience that it took to wobble from couch to coffee table was the same patience I needed to play D to G. I soon discovered that the possibilities were endless and were limited only by creativity and knowledge of the guitar. I needed to know more. I spent hours and hours working on this: knowing that all the best guitar players had done the same thing before me. I don’t claim to know it all either, I’m still learning and have a long journey ahead. To be honest, most seasoned guitar players I’ve met have said the same thing. Even though I am in awe of their tantalizing licks, it’s encourging to know that they aren’t any different. Sure, they can play circles around me but they have the same love for playing guitar as I do. It’s that simple and, unfortunately, it gets warped by our ego and desire to be a guitar god. This isn’t the true nature of music. It’s nature is to draw us into something more then ourselves, leaving us connected to one another.
