Based on the DuBose’s novel entitled “Porgy”, “Porgy and Bess” is an opera crafted by the talented American composer, George Gershwin. Gershwin took the inspiration from a play with the same title “Porgy,” created by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward.
The opera had attracted much controversies not only because the cast was an assemble of talented classical African-American performers but because it perpetuated the demeaning stereotypes surrounding the black people- a fearless yet sensitive socio-political subject at a time when discrimination was prevalent.
Not only that, there is a discomfiting contradictory with the setup as Gershwin’s most-performed opera features the African-American musicians, but is the work of an all-white casts.
Nevertheless, “Porgy and Bess” demonstrated power and social relevance, an extraordinary and unforgettable defiance of how Gershwin’s Porgy remains a tiny David against the Goliaths of this world.
